Myoan Shakuhachi, the sacred sound

明暗尺八

What is Myoan Shakuhachi?

Since the 17th century until recently, some Japanese monks wearing straw basket on their head, called "komuso"  used to seek enlightment and healing by playing solo pieces  with their bamboo flute during their alms around Japan.

They belonged to the Fuke sect  which was part  of the well known Japanese "Rinzai" Zen bouddhism School.

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Japanese government introduced reforms abolishing the Fuke sect. Records of their musical repertoire survived, and are being revived in the 21st century by the Myoan organization".

Nowadays, the temple "Myoanji" (light and darkness) is the home of this centuries old bamboo flute tradition preserved by some laymen in the heart of Kyoto.
